Once perched above steel mills and heavy industry, the South Side Slopes grew to become the proximate bedroom community for workers in the South Side Flats. In defiance of the challenging topography, detached houses, schools, churches, and green spaces cling to the wooded hillside. Today, the mills are long gone, and the Slopes aim to celebrate their history, optimism, and unique qualities at key locations, but with much more than "welcome to the neighborhood" signs.
